Introduction
Monte Saccarello, standing tall at 2,201 meters (7,221 feet), is the highest peak in the Ligurian Alps, straddling the border between Italy and France. This picturesque mountain offers an unforgettable experience for outdoor enthusiasts and romantics alike. My girlfriend and I recently embarked on this thrilling adventure, soaking in the stunning views and overcoming the challenges that this majestic peak presents.

 

The Journey Begins
Our journey began early in the morning, with the sun rising over the horizon, casting a golden hue across the landscape. We chose to start our hike from the small village of Monesi di Triora, located in the Liguria region of Italy. The weather was perfect—clear skies, a gentle breeze, and warm temperatures, ideal for a day of climbing.

The trail to Monte Saccarello is well-marked and accessible, making it suitable for hikers of varying experience levels. However, it’s important to be prepared for a long trek, as the ascent involves approximately 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) of elevation gain over a distance of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

 

The Climb: Challenges and Triumphs
As we ascended, the trail became steeper, winding through dense forests of beech and pine. The path was rocky in places, requiring careful footing, but nothing too technical for seasoned hikers. The real challenge was maintaining a steady pace as the incline increased, but we took our time, pausing to take in the beautiful surroundings.

About halfway up, we emerged from the treeline, greeted by expansive alpine meadows. The views were nothing short of spectacular, with rolling green hills stretching out before us and the peaks of the Alps towering in the distance. We took a moment to rest and enjoy a light snack, feeling a deep sense of peace in this serene environment.

 

The Summit: A Rewarding View
The final push to the summit was the most demanding part of the climb. The path became narrower and more rugged, with loose stones underfoot. But as we neared the top, the anticipation grew, and the fatigue melted away. Finally, we reached the summit, where a statue of the Redentore (Christ the Redeemer) stands as a symbol of peace and protection.

The 360-degree view from the top was breathtaking, with the Ligurian Sea to the south and the snow-capped peaks of the Maritime Alps to the north. We could even see as far as Corsica on the horizon. Standing there, hand in hand with my girlfriend, we felt a deep sense of accomplishment and connection with each other and the world around us.

 

Descending: A Gentle Return
The descent was much easier, though we still took care on the rocky sections. We retraced our steps through the meadows and forests, savoring the journey back as much as the ascent. By late afternoon, we reached Monesi di Triora again, tired but exhilarated.
